Professor Arthur Shulkes

Associate Dean (Research), Faculty of Medicine, University of Melbourne

Arthur Shulkes (BSc (hons), PhD, DSc) is a University of Melbourne Professorial Fellow and Associate Dean (Research) and formerly Associate Dean (Research Training) in the Faculty of Medicine, Dentistry and Health Sciences. I am a NHMRC Senior Principal Research Fellow based at the Department of Surgery, Austin Hospital. I have been supported by the NHMRC Fellowship scheme since 1985 and am a former President of the National Association of Research Fellows.

My research expertise is in growth factors and cancers and the physiology and pathology of the gastrointestinal tract. I have published more than 200 refereed articles. I am a basic scientist with training in endocrinology and physiology and was awarded my PhD for research done at the Howard Florey Institute while enrolled in the University of Melbourne Department of Physiology.

Prof Shulkes has spent much of his research life in a Department of Surgery and so has an appreciation of the basic science-clinician- interface and translating research findings into better clinical practice.  His research has been recognised by the award of the Distinguished Research Prize of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia and he is a Fellow of the American Gastroenterological Association, as well as past chair of the International Symposium on Regulatory Peptides and past chair of the Gastroenterological Society of Australia Research Institute.

Currently funded by the NHMRC, ARC, NIH, Cancer Council Victoria, Prostate Council of Australia, Kidney Health Australia and the University of Melbourne, Prof Shulkes has extensive experience in peer review as a member or Chair of NHMRC Grant Review Panels or Fellowship panels for more than 20 years.

In his role as Associate Dean (Research) Prof Shulkes is tasked with recommending research priorities and developing research strategic plans for the Faculty and being the interface with the University in determining whole of institution research and research training plans. He also has a major role in integrating the research and research training activities of affiliated medical research institutes and teaching hospitals.

Prof Shulkes has been involved with Research Australia for many years as a member of the University roundtable.
