Ramaciotti Biomedical Research Awards

Perpetual has announced that applications for the 2012 Annual Ramaciotti Biomedical Research Awards have opened.

The Ramaciotti Foundations, managed by Perpetual, will award in excess of $1.6 million to Australian biomedical researchers this October, through the Ramaciotti Establishment and Equipment Grants and the Ramaciotti Medal of Excellence in Biomedical Research.

The Establishment and Equipment Grants of up to $75,000 are open to groups or individuals in universities, public hospitals or institutes undertaking biomedical research. Establishment Grants provide financial support for emerging researchers, while Equipment Grants go towards the purchase of a major piece of equipment.

Andrew Thomas, General Manager, Philanthropy at Perpetual, said, “The awards support researchers at all stages in their career, often enabling them start a piece of work or to buy equipment that has become critical in their later successes.

“Under Perpetual’s management the Ramaciotti Foundations have granted over $51 million to biomedical research since Vera’s $6.7 million investment in 1970. The awards are a great opportunity for researchers all over Australia and we want to encourage applications from all the states and territories.”

Applications for the Ramaciotti Medal for Excellence in Biomedical Research are also open. The Medal carries an award of $50,000 and recognises outstanding contribution to clinical or biomedical research, or the way in which healthcare is delivered.

Mr Thomas highlighted that this year Perpetual has opened up the guidelines for the Ramaciotti Medal nominations.

“Everyone who has made an outstanding contribution to the biomedical field can now be nominated for the Ramaciotti Medal of Excellence, whether they have had Ramaciotti funding before or not.

“By changing the guidelines we hope to broaden the nominations for the Medal and recognise outstanding work from an even larger field of researchers,” he said.

Applications for the Ramaciotti grants and the Ramaciotti Medal close on 31 May 2012. Anyone interested should visit the website for further information: http://www.perpetual.com.au/ramaciotti/index.htm

Cystic Fibrosis PhD Top Up Scholarships 2012

Cystic Fibrosis Western Australia (CFWA) is a charitable not-for-profit association incorporated in WA, whose vision is of a world where Lives are Unaffected by Cystic Fibrosis.

Today, as a result of improvements in early diagnosis, intervention, treatment and better pharmaceuticals, most children affected by Cystic Fibrosis (CF) are now surviving well into adulthood. As a result, for the first time ever, there are now more adults living with CF than children.

The ageing of the CF population is seen as a great success story in which CFWA has played a role, however, this is placing increasing demands on CF services here in Western Australia and particularly adult services.

Domestically and indeed internationally, there appears to be a shortage of specialists in this field who will meet these future demands as the population ages. So, after extensive consultation with a broad range of stakeholders, CFWA has decided to offer a limited number of PhD Top Up Scholarships to encourage and support PhD students here in WA who are undertaking research in areas related to CF. The scholarships are available to all PhD students working in this field however, applications from researchers working in an area of CF which has specific implications for adults living with CF are particularly encouraged.

CFWA hope that these scholarships will stimulate a lifelong interest in this exciting area of research and thus increase the pool of talent in WA from which to draw in the future.

These scholarships are administered through the Australian Cystic Fibrosis Research Trust on behalf of CFWA. Each Scholarship is for $10,000 per annum for a maximum of three years. Conditions apply.

Applications close on Thursday 31st May 2012 at 5pm EST.

Emailed applications will be accepted but copies with academic records and a signed declaration must follow by mail.

Application forms are available from:

The Commonwealth Fund invites interested applicants from Australia to apply for the 2013-14 Harkness Fellowships.

The Harkness Fellowships provide a unique opportunity for mid-career professionals—academic researchers, government policymakers, clinicians, managers, and journalists—from Australia, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, to spend up to 12 months in the United States conducting a policy-oriented research study, working with leading U.S. health policy experts, and gaining an in-depth knowledge of the U.S., Australian, Canadian, Dutch, German, New Zealand, Norwegian, Swiss, and U.K. health care systems. Fellows also participate in a series of policy and leadership seminars organized by the Fund throughout the year with U.S. health care leaders drawn from government, politics, health care organizations, and academia.

Applicants must demonstrate a strong interest in health policy issues and propose a study within the scope of The Commonwealth Fund’s principal areas of focus: health care system performance—including access to care and insurance coverage, quality and patient safety, efficiency, and equity; patient-centered primary care; and quality of care for vulnerable populations, e.g., low income families, children, the elderly, and minorities.

Once selected, the Fund will provide extensive support to successful Fellows to help them develop and shape their research proposals to better fit the context of the U.S. health system. Through its network of contacts, the Fund will help identify and place Fellows with mentors who are experts in the policy areas to be studied, e.g., at Harvard University, Columbia University, University of California at San Francisco, Johns Hopkins University, Kaiser Permanente, Veterans Health Administration, Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI), RAND, Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, and Group Health Cooperative at Puget Sound.

A peer-reviewed journal article or policy report for Health Ministers and other high-level policy audiences is the anticipated product of the fellowship. Harkness Fellows have published their findings in leading journals, including: British Medical Journal, Health Affairs, Health Policy, International Journal for Quality in Health Care, New England Journal of Medicine, and Quality and Safety in Health Care.

Building on their fellowship experiences, Harkness Fellows have moved into senior positions within academia, government, and health care delivery organizations, making valuable contributions to health policy and practice at home and in the United States. In addition, Harkness Fellows become part of a strong international network, with opportunities for ongoing cross-national collaborations and research.

deadline for receipt of applications is SEPTEMBER 17, 2012.

Each fellowship will provide up to U.S. $119,000 in support, which includes round trip airfare to the United States, a monthly stipend, travel to a program of Harkness seminars and policy briefings, project-related travel and other research expenses, health insurance, and U.S. taxes.  In addition, a supplemental allowance is provided to Fellows accompanied by a partner and/or children (e.g., approximately $50,000 for a partner and two children up to age 18) to cover airfare, living expenses, and health insurance.  In addition, a supplemental allowance is provided to Fellows accompanied by a spouse and/or children.

Bone Health Foundation - Research for healthier bones

You know and we know that many people take their bones for granted. That is, until something goes wrong or starts to ache or doesn’t work as it should, which is the case for more than
