Supporting Research In Our National Interest

Six of our best academics will help the Gillard Labor Government better support our researchers so they can continue to make discoveries that improve our lives.

By providing advice to the Australian Research Council these research leaders will use their expert knowledge in fields including Indigenous studies and creative arts to help the ARC further its ambitious reform agenda. This agenda aims to improve ARC funding schemes so they can better support today's research sector.

Announcing the new members of the ARC Advisory Council, Innovation Minister Senator Kim Carr said he had expanded the membership from seven to ten to help the Australian Government better understand and support the breadth of research undertaken in Australia.

"I have appointed esteemed academics Professors Peter Buckskin, Stephen Garton, Margaret Harding, Paul Johnson, Amanda Lawson and Ian Young to the ARC Advisory Council,” Senator Carr said.

“They join continuing members Emeritus Professor David Siddle, Professor Robyn Owens, Ms Robyn Baker, as well as ARC CEO Professor Margaret Sheil, who remains the Chair.

“Their combined knowledge and diverse backgrounds will ensure the Advisory Council is able to continue to form balanced and informed opinions.

“Professor Buckskin will strengthen the Advisory Council with his experience in Indigenous research matters. Professor Lawson will increase the ability of the ARC to assess support for research in the creative arts.

“Professors Garton, Harding, Johnson and Young will provide insight from their roles as senior university leaders and research leaders in their fields.

“I thank Professors Stuart Macintyre, Terry Hughes and John Ralston AO, who are retiring from the Advisory Council, for their invaluable contribution over the last three years and wish them well in their future endeavours.”

The ARC Advisory Council was established in 2008. For more information, visit the ARC website.
